But to give you an idea, we list down some easy ways on how to efficiently and successfully paint a room.

Materials

Keep in mind that you cannot effectively paint a room when you do not have the right materials to use. The moment you decide to paint, make sure that you have these materials below:

  • Paint (water-based is easier for a first-time painter to use)
  • Primer
  • Brushes
  • Roller
  • Paint Tray
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Tarp or drop cloth
  • Plastic wrap
  • Ladder
  • Extension pole (needed when painting the ceiling)
  • Rags
  • Rubber gloves
  • Old shoes
  • Mask or respirator
  • Coveralls (optional)
  • Protective eyewear
  • Hat

1. Prepare the room

Never start painting when your room is not prepared yet. Make sure to remove all objects from the room, including your furniture, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and everything else that are in your room. After emptying your room lay down a drop cloth or a large tarpaulin on the floor – this is to protect your floor from any dripping paint. After that, apply the painter’s tape to trims and edges of your doors, windows, baseboards, light switches and electrical outlets. Also, don’t forget to remove any damages or cracks on the walls.

2. Prepare your materials

For you not to commit costly mistakes, you need to double check your paint to see if the hardware stored mixed the paint color you ordered correctly. Make sure all the brush and rollers you will use are clean and free from any debris or old paint. One cool trick to use when painting is to wrap a heavy duty rubber band around the paint can vertically, to reduce the amount of paint spilled over the edge of the can.

3. Apply a primer

One reason why you should apply a primer to your wall it’s because, it allows the paint to adhere to the surface better, while it prevents the stain from going through the paint. Apply a primer before painting your walls.

4. Paint the ceiling first

To prevent paint from dripping, paint your ceilings first before painting the walls and trims. You can use the ladder and extension pole attached to your roller for easier access to the ceiling. Keep in mind that you need to let the first coat dry completely before adding your second coat.

5. Paint the walls

When painting your walls, use a roller for faster and easier work. You can use it to paint up a single strip from the bottom to top, or even make a zigzag pattern going down/ for best results; you can also make swift and smooth motions with the roller.

6. Paint the trims

Before painting the trims, remove the painter’s tape first as carefully as possible to prevent leaving some residue on the trim. Just make sure to remove them slowly and steady to avoid brush marks or paint splatter. Then, do the first coat and dry them completely before applying for the second one.

6. Clean Up

After letting all the paint dry, it’s time for you to clean up. Make sure to remove the materials out from your room and clean your brush and rollers immediately for future use. After cleaning and once the smell is completely gone, you can now put back all the things inside your room.

Painting a room is simple. As a first timer, you just have to follow these simple steps mentioned above for you to be guided on what and what not to do when painting your room.
