Even high-end residence such as a condo in Manila units could still make use of added designs in order to bring an air of celebration to their personal space.

Today, we’ve listed 9 decoration ideas you might want to try out in your place.

Rather than buying a ready-made banner with the typical ‘Merry Christmas!’ greeting, you might want to try out creating your own version using any recyclables you can find from your place. You could use cardboards, felt papers, paint and more to add a bit of personality to the design. With a personalized banner, you get to create individual letters that can be detached from one another so you can use it later on for forming another word.

Buying a set of thick construction papers will already allow you to create lots of foldable Christmas tree which you can then display on tables and on top of other furniture at home. For added protection, you could also place them inside a fiberglass.

If you have a gift for drawing, then might as well use it to make creative Christmas designs against wooden furniture at home. Cork boards, wooden displays and more could serve as your canvass. Use different colors of chalk and draw whatever design that comes to mind.

Glitters on glasses

Glitters are often used as accessories for something else, but if you make use of it well, it can be your highlight. Buy glitters and gather empty glasses at home. Pour those glitters inside the glasses and customize the covers with colors and ribbons. These candle lights don’t have to be hanged somewhere. You can use those small candles and place them inside uncapped empty glass jars. Line them up on your entryway and let their natural glow provide the attraction during evenings!

Spice up the wrappers for your gifts!

If you don’t want to touch that gorgeous Christmas tree at home but would like to add a bit if uniqueness on its display, then bring the customization to the wrappers you use the gifts you’re about to place below the tree. Your imagination is the limit. Strive to use items at home and see what you get.

The perfect modern dream home would be incomplete without a swimming pool. Whether it’s an outdoor or indoor swimming pool, an above ground or an in-ground one, every household should consider installing one. If you invest in one, you’ll be sure that after a long day at work, or during a hot summer’s day, you will have something which will soothe your nerves, and if you want to invite your friends over, it becomes a great party theme.

Installing a Swimming Pool

1. Pool Hygiene

Although indoor and outdoor pools are considered a must-have for every modern home, this luxury does not come without responsibilities. Recreational Water Illness is a term used for illnesses that are caused by swimming in unhygienic pools. Although, it is known that chlorine can kill most germs in pools, it is important to keep in mind some of more effective ways of combating this health threat. If the pH level in a pool is above 7.4 % it can cause severe damage and irritation of the eyes as well as mucous membranes. If it is below the healthy percentage, it can cause cloudy vision and skin irritations. The best way for one to control and maintain a hygienic pool environment is to consider more sophisticated alternatives such as various UV disinfection methods.

2. Indoor Pools

Indoor pools have become increasingly popular with modern day pool buyers. This kind of a pool offers you the luxury of enjoying your pool during the entire year and not just during summer. The installation process usually depends on what kind of a pool you want and how much space it is going to require. Ideas for these pools are limited only by the customer’s imagination and budget. The perfect time to start planning for the construction of an indoor pool would be before you make the blueprint for your new home where it will be built. Adding an indoor pool to a home that has already been built will only cause unnecessary problems and delay your enjoyment.

Indoor pools should be constructed so that the water slopes towards the pool so it wouldn’t move towards the walls of the home and cause damage. As far as construction materials go, this type of pool can be built from materials such as glass or ceramic. When you’re installing an indoor pool you don’t have to worry about the weather conditions as is in the case of outdoor pool construction. For indoor pools the only real issue is air humidity which needs to be maintained at 84 to 86 degrees as to avoid the appearance of mold and excessive damage to the walls. It’s therefore crucial to install plastic vapor barriers. Additionally, you can decorate the tiles of your indoor pool and add some interesting lighting.

3. Outdoor Pools

As opposed to indoor pools, outdoor pools require a lot more attention and care. In contrast, you don’t have to worry about planning like with outdoor pools because pool construction can be done any day of the year regardless of the construction of the house. Typically for outdoor pools, as opposed to indoor ones, you would want to build it so that the water slopes on the outside.

4. Outdoor Above Ground Pools

Above ground pools can vary in shape and size and it all comes down to what you want .You can set up small ones for small children, or tall and wide ones for grownups to enjoy. There are a few steps that should be followed when setting up a more complex above ground pool. First you would need to remove all the grass from the area that your pool will take up. It is important to rake the soil in order to remove excess weeds and roots, and to moisten it. Then outline the surface and create a wooden construction to hold the plates and covers together. Never forget to check if the pool is level, and for that purpose you would always want to keep a level at hand.

5. Outdoor In-Ground Pools

When it comes to outdoor in-ground pools the options are endless. These kinds of pools will never go out of style and are relatively affordable. The most popular kinds of in-ground pools are: Fiberglass, vinyl-lined and concrete. Depending on the preference of the buyer there are no significant differences between these materials. The rarest kinds are steel and aluminum-walled pools. Concrete pools generally take about 3-4 months to construct, but can last for decades – typically 30-50 years if it is on level ground.

We all want our homes to look good and for us to feel god while we are spending time there. This is one of the reasons we put so much effort into decorating our living space and making it more comfortable. For those who are not fans of ready-made decorating items and who prefer to express their creativity by taking up interesting DIY projects instead, here are four breath-taking DIY ideas for the walls of your home or office.

ideas for the walls

Postcards wall

Postcards used to be so important, in the era where phone calls were expensive and not many people had phones anyway, those were the only ways to let someone know you were thinking of them when you were away, and vice versa. Your grandma and mom probably have a stack of old postcards from previous century somewhere in an old box in the attic or basement, and would be thrilled to go through them again. If you can’t find some from your family, you can buy postcards in thrift shops and garage sales for very little money and turn them into beautiful wall art. This way you will be able to remember the past much more easily, and your walls will have that beautiful vintage aura.

Postcards wall

Mosaic frames

For this, you only need a bunch of old CDs and some glue. You can cut the CDs with big scissors if you would like to work with straight edge pieces, or you can break them to get uneven pieces which you could use as a puzzle. Put all the pieces in a big box, get a simple photo frame and glue the pieces onto it. Once you are finished, you will get a beautiful reflecting frame which will look great on your wall and it will even act as a mini disco ball and reflect the light that your lamps and chandeliers cast.

Mosaic frames

Industrial chic

If you live in an apartment with predominant industrial wall design, such as urban exterior wall cladding, go with rustic steam punk decorations. These can include pipe wall lamps and minimalist metal sculptures made of wire, copper, or brass. What is more, when you have visible pipes or pipe lamps, you can use them to hang photos on strings from them, which will give you rustic air that matches industrial design of your place perfectly. Framed art works well too, like old signs. What is more, simple chalkboard that doesn’t have to be too big can serve as your canvas where you could leave ordinary notes and it will still look like modern and innovative art.

Industrial chic

String and nails

This type of wall art takes very little time and money to make and it looks amazing once it’s finished and hanged. Take an empty frame or a simple piece of wood or even styrofoam and use it as a canvas into which you will stick nails or pins so that they form a certain shape; for example a leaf or a Batman sign. Next, you take a thread or string, tie it around one nail and start ‘braiding’ a picture going from one nail to another. You can make it as thick as you like and you can even combine differently coloured strings to create vivid artwork. You can even choose to put nails all around the frame and ‘braid’ outside the desired shape if you like.

It doesn’t take too much of your time, patience, and money to take up these projects and turn the ideas into action. It is important to be creative and innovative and to always look for new ways to express yourself, because the space in which you live and work should be a reflection of who you are.

If you want to ensure that your garage door is going to last a long time, then you have to clean it regularly, especially the garage door tracks. You don’t want the tracks to get too grimy, as it can lead to rusting. If this happens, then you’re not only putting the reliability and safety of the garage door at risk, but you’ll also be putting your lives at risk. Accidents do happen because of faulty garage door tracks.

Here are some tips for cleaning your garage door:

When to Clean and the Materials to Use

Cleaning your garage door is very easy, and it’ll only take you half an hour to get the job done. You also don’t need special tools when cleaning the garage door as all you will only need your regular cleaning materials. If there are rusty spots in the garage door, you will also need sandpaper or steel wool to scrape away the rust. For the tracks and other moving parts, you will also need a lubricant.

Your garage door needs to be cleaned at least every six months. However, if you live in an industrial area or if you live near the sea, then you might need to clean it four times a year. This is because dirty air from the fumes as well as the higher salt content in the air from coastal areas can easily cause rusting.

Clean Your Garage Door

Steps in Cleaning Garage Doors

Before you wash the whole garage door, you first need to check the garage door tracks as well as the moving parts like hinges and rollers. Use a clean rag to wipe away soot, oil, and grime; and if there is rusting, then you can use the sandpaper or the steel wool to get rid of it.

Once done, wash all surfaces with a mild detergent and water. Thoroughly scrub soot and grime away with a stiff brush, and rinse it off with clean water. After you’re through with the exterior, you can proceed with the interior.

When it comes to applying the lubricant, see to it that you’re only using lubricants specifically made for garage doors, a good example of which is white lithium grease. You need to apply lubricants to all moving parts, such as the roller wheel bearings as well as the garage door tracks and the axles and all the hinges. Once done, wipe away the excess lubricant then test the garage doors by opening and closing it. It’ll spread the lubricant further to the hard-to-reach areas. It’ll also assure you that the moving parts are working well.

Need Repairs?

In addition to cleaning the garage doors, you should also take the opportunity to check and see if there are parts that need replacement. Some of the most common problems are broken garage door springs and cable, damaged garage door section, as well as busted transmitters and circuit board.

If you have the technical know-how to replace these parts on your own, then you can easily do so. If not, then it’s advisable that you hire a reputable provider who can repair or replace garage door parts for you. You don’t want to do more damage to it as this can cost you more money.

Over the past few years, there has been a perpetual growth in crime and violent incidents. Every day we have reports of violent incidents taking place around us. Most such untoward incidents are an outcome of improper home security systems. Home security has been taken quite lightly by most of us alike. We are hence, equally culpable for these crimes and increasing rates of violence.

Homes tend to make us feel safer and we love remaining in the secure confines of home, doing anything that pleases us. Most of the times, we usually focus on enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our homes and forget about safety concerns. It is one of the most common mistakes we make, which leaves us at a greater threat of theft or burglary.

Importance of Door Security

When dealing with home safety and security, the entry to your home is a major concern. Doors are a part of only one third of the total exterior, but these serve as major entry points for some of the most disastrous break-ins and thefts. Sporting a perspicacious attitude towards door security and your own safety can help you evade most such untoward incidents.

Doors are the medium to separate out prying fingers and curious, pernicious eyes from entering your household. If you value your home security and wellbeing more than anything else, its time you install a sturdy door and help your home become the safe haven it is. It is also imperative to ascertain whether your front door and door jamb as strong enough to prevent unwanted entries and safeguard your homes.

DIY Door Installation

DIY Door Installation

Sometimes, most of us end up overestimating the impact of any task and leave it completely on professionals. Tasks like door installation for safety are not as tough, as often perceived. If you’re looking to install your door on your own, here’s a step-by-step guide to effective installation of an entry door in your home:

Step 1: Clear out the door way

The first and foremost step to executing door installation is to get rid of any excess drywall around the door way. You can trim it off, so that the door way is all smooth and ready for another door to be installed neatly.

Step 2: Level out the Floor

Make sure your floor is all level and smooth. If your floor needs to be levelled out furthermore, consider marking for shims to make the floor appear smooth and plain. Make sure you determine the right locations for shims, and impeccably execute the process further.

Step 3: Determine the size of door and remove packing materials

Once you’re done with cleaning up the door way, consider cutting the door to the right length after determining the proper size. You would need to remove the packing material and the plug that comes on the pre-hung door. Ensure that you get rid of stray packaging material and only then proceed with further installation.

Step 4: Attach Shim and position the door

Get started with the main installation by tacking a nail on the shim in the doorway. Soon after you do that, position your door and place it inside the opening. Make sure your door is plumb and your door is able to swing open easily. Secure the jamb along its length with the help of nails and check the door opening. In order to leave room for further adjustments, place a shim by the bottom hinge.

Step 5: Nail the Door in Place

You can complete the door installation easily by nailing the door in place and filling up the nail holes. Make sure you check the door and ensure that it opens and shuts properly.

This step-by-step guide fits for wooden doors that can be easily nailed in place. If however, you have a metallic door with an automated lock, you may have to weld it to your metallic hinges. Welding is often perceived as a challenging task that requires proper care. You can easily go about with DIY welding, after careful considerations. Read along how to weld on your own:

Step 1: Get your Equipment

A 230 volt, 50-amp electrical outlet can easily support your initial welding operation. Head towards a welding supply dealer and get yourself an electric arc welder. You would need welding rods and a basic E6011 rod would do well. A carbon arc torch would be required if your door installation requires brazing. If however, you need welding rods for cutting purposes, consider choosing E6010 rods for the same.

Step2: Welding Safety

You would know that welding is the delicate dance between heat, metal and equipment. Make sure you execute this crafty task after proper safety considerations. Some essentials to remember while welding include:

  • Wear welding safety clothing, which comprises of safety gloves, eye wear and head gear. Do not wear open-toed footwear lest you get burnt by weld splatter.
  • Wear full-sleeved clothes to evade stray weld splatter.
  • Perform your welding operations in a well-ventilated welding workstation that prevents toxic air build-up.
  • Make sure your equipment is good quality and the wires are of proper gauge.
  • Avoid welding under the direct rays of sunlight, if you’re welding in the patio and choose to keep plenty of water close to you so that there is no chance of dehydration.
  • Avoid wearing synthetic fibres that can easily catch fire
  • While welding your door, make sure you isolate the welding place from the rest of your home. You can also use welding curtains to avoid weld splatter around your home.
  • Remove curtains and avoid welding in cluttered surroundings. There should be no clutter around your welding workstation and the area should be perfectly clean and clear.

Step3: Execute the Welds

Read the welding manuals before starting, as the welding process may vary differently for any welding equipment. Have someone help you hold the door in place and use clamps and weights to further hold it in place. Tack the metal pieces well and avoid warping. Begin with slow and steady feed cuts and pay attention towards the ‘Duty Cycle’.

A few welds would be good enough to have your door in place. Make it a point to pay proper attention to welding safety. If the welding and fixing processes leave your door unkempt, make it a point to coat your door with some beautiful paint. Avoid any experimenting and if you still don’t feel confident about welding DIY, avail some professional services!

A sturdy door would help in enhancing your home safety and make your homes safe havens. Make it a point to install firm doors with safety locks. Let no prying visitor take advantage of your noisy hinges and weak doors and threaten your home safety.

Everyone loves to save money and go head strong into a project for the home. Many Do It Yourself (DIY) tilers move forward with a job without giving full review to what is about to be taken on. Even from purchasing the tile, often buying the wrong ones is the first mistake.

Everyone should take the time to investigate what is about to become a permanent fixture in the home or exterior. The cost of tearing up and starting over is one reason to get it right the first time.

Here are 5 things which can go wrong and helpful hints which will keep the job moving in the right direction.

DIY Tile Installation

1. Why Are My Tiles Darker in the Shower Then the Rest of the Room?

No matter what type is being used every kind has an absorption rate. It’s simplistic to think that unglazed terracotta has the most water intake (about 15% or more). Even with glazed porcelain tiles they still have some form of consumption as well (usually .01%). Glazed tiles can seem impervious to liquids unless there is an issue from behind the surface or the grout; this is where the problems start.

If a moisture barrier which should have been installed is skipped over then this is definitely something which should have been looked at closer. Some other problems associated with this issue is a broken water line leading to the shower head or faucet. To find out more on this and other problems associated with moisture under tiles take a look in for a Denver Tile Outlet or any other outlet in the local area.

2. The Tiles Are cracking At the Corners

This is a case which so many run into with the incorrect installation. It’s often associated with the wrong bonding agent or how the mortar is applied. This is why it’s important to have the correct trowel. Be sure to receive professional help and be positive the right one is chosen. If a tile sounds hollow when stepped on it’s due to the very same reason.

Those who put a dot of extra bonding at the corners also create this identical issue. There can be smaller misgivings which total up to an equal effect but often spotty application of the mortar is the number one reason.

3. The Frieze Tiles Do Not Match The Main Tiles

Tiles which have an applied decoration which are fired numerous times are referred to a “second firing”. Sometimes tiles are kilned multiple times, even as many as four or five. This is due to the process of bonding multiple décor to the surface. When this is done several times the glaze or the material of the tile can and will change color.

Often the glazed surface is what changes most. So when looking at this applied decoration be sure to examine them in full daylight to be positive they match before installation occurs.

4. Some of The Tiles Are Thicker Then Others

This falls true with natural stone tiles. Hard tiles such as quartz or granite are always machined and like marble they will be the same thickness regardless. With other options like limestone and slate these often come in different width because they are cut from a single larger slab. A professional will know the difference and check them first but many DIY tilers overlook this and then the troubles begin.

If this happens with a porcelain or ceramic tile it’s usually because they are either a tile which looks the same but is not the same (meaning from a different company) or by chance they are made by the same establishment at a different plant. Anyone can mix multiple thickness tiles but the person installing them must be aware so that the bonding agent can be adjusted.

5. The Wall & Floor Tiles Have Hairline Cracks To Them

From time to time, even after installation of years gone by, the surface glaze of tiles start to crack. These flaws are slight and do not permeate into the earthenware. This is known as “crazing”. Often this is mistaken for cracks but under normal condition this problem can be seen but won’t cause any noticeable issues in the long run.

This process is from the surface expanding and contracting during installation or from hot and cold temperatures to the surface. Sometimes a high bonding adhesive is used to mount a tile. If it is used in a thick application under a porous tile then it’s easily possible it can literally twist the tile. This twisting motion will make the glaze craze, often in a short amount of time. Crazing does not affect the performance of a tile and should not be changed for any other reason other than for appearance factors.

Having a broken air conditioner unit can be very inconvenient during the warmer months. Professional repair, from a company like Alek HVAC, may seem like an unnecessary cost for small repairs. The good news is that several small repairs are easy DIY projects that can be completed in a weekend.

Here are seven repair projects that you can do yourself.

1. Clean Filter

If your air has started to smell musty or mildewy, that is an indication that it’s time to disinfect the filter. This is a fairly simple process. Slide the filter out of the unit, and vacuum off any loose particles. Rinse the filter with a detergent solution that kills mold and allow to thoroughly air dry.

2. Repair a Duct Leak

A leaky duct can cause expensive air escape and leave you with a warm house. Locate a duct leak by carefully examining all ductwork. After you have found the worn duct, repair the rip with duct tape. Apply fab mesh, and paint over it with a mastic sealant. The air should be back to normal as soon as the sealant dries.

3. Clean Your Ducts

Ducts carry a lot of air on a regular basis and can get quite dirty. Air ducts should be periodically purified to prevent dirt and mold buildup. To wash ducts, remove duct vent covers, and swish a long brush into ducts as far as you can reach. Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove the remaining debris.

4. Repair Bent Coil Fins

If you have noticed the temperature rising in your house, bent coil fins may be to blame. Bent coil fins can severely inhibit the airflow on your unit. Straightening bent fins is fairly easy. Repair coil fins by removing the unit cover to expose the fins. Remove the filter, and run a fin comb along the length of the fins. This action should gently straighten out any bent fins. Replace the filter and cover, and test your unit for improved efficiency.

5. Adding Freon

Units sometimes lose Freon through the cooling process. Adding coolant to your air conditioning system can greatly improve efficiency and save money. This is a very delicate process that requires care and precision. Slowly pour the coolant into the low side of your unit. If you are at all wary about attempting this process yourself, it is best to consult a professional.

6. Change the Thermostat Battery

A dead battery on the thermostat is a common reason why your air conditioner will not run. This is an easy and inexpensive problem to correct. Locate the battery holder, and remove the batteries. This sometimes involves unscrewing the thermostat from the wall. Replace old batteries with fully charged ones, and your unit should turn right on.

7. Repair a Squeaky Fan

A squeaky air conditioner can be very annoying. The fan is usually to blame for this bothersome noise. This is a very easy problem to fix. The fan has ball bearings that allow it to spin and cool off your house. A liberal spray of lubricating oil on the ball bearings should bring the squeaking to an end.

A great way to boost the curb appeal to your home is by adding a fence. Fences help to provide you with additional safety and security for your yard as well as giving you some needed privacy. Some people choose to purchase a fence from a builder where others add them on their own. With the right supplies, you will find that building a fence is not as hard as you might think.

Here are a few steps to help you create your own wood fence:

  1. First, settle on the area you want the fence to cover. Do you want it to go around the entire home or are you adding it to a garden area only?
  2. Take measurements to enable you to produce an organized structure. The measurements you take should include that of your posts, as well as the spacing between the holes you are meant to dig.
  3. Head to a home improvement store to pick up all of the supplies you need to build a fence. If you do not like the idea of building the posts, many stores will build it for you and all you need to do is then follow the directions to install it. Look at the costs and type of work that you need to do in order to justify if this is worth it for your situation.
  4. Place markers to indicate the exact spots for the holes. To do this, you can drive sticks into the ground, at each spot. It is important that you get the right measurements for each section of the fence or else you will end up re-doing the entire fence!
  5. Dig the holes, and then gather your posts. Place each post into the hole and then secure the section of fencing to the posts. Secure your posts firmly on the ground by ensuring that at least a third of their length goes beneath the ground.
  6. Make certain that the planks are aligned to allow for a neat finish.
  7. Upon the post and plank installation you can add the railings to the fence.
  8. Treat the wood with a termite sealtant and water sealant to prevent the wood from rotting and aging rapidly.
  9. Paint the wood fence to the desired color. A simple stain may look great for your home. Look at the various types of stain and paint that will match your home and will help to improve your curb appeal.
  10. After the paint and sealant has dried, add a second coating to make the fence really stand out. A fence will require yearly upkeep with a sealant to prevent the fence from aging rapidly.

Building A Fence

Putting up a fence is definitely not a complex project but it may require multiple people in order to secure the fence in the right manner. Brands such as Delta will provide you with what you require for a fencing project.
