  • The most important factor in deciding how many paintings to hang in a room is size. If you have a ten-foot-wide sofa, you should hang art that is at least six and a half feet high. If you have a smaller, more intimate room, you should hang smaller pictures that are about two-thirds as tall as the sofa. And if you have a large room, it may be wise to hang a few big pictures in clusters.
  • The width and height of the wall will also determine how many paintings should be hung. Portrait pictures typically need between two and three inches of wall space, so you should hang them at a distance of two to four feet from the ceiling. The height of the painting will also play a role in determining how many paintings should be in the room. The size of the wall should also be considered. The length of the wall should be measured as well as the height of the ceiling.
  • The height of the piece will determine the size of the space. Divide the height by two to find the focal point. You should place your focal point at a distance of 57 to 60 inches from the floor. A framed painting should be about three-fourths the width of the furniture. If you’re unsure of how many paintings to hang in a room, make templates of each piece.
  • If you plan on hanging more than one painting in a room, you can make a blueprint first. Tape paper squares to the wall. Trace the outlines of the squares with a pencil, and then cut the squares around the frames. Then, you can make adjustments if needed. When laying out the art, remember that the center of the cluster should be at eye level.
  • The midpoint of the artwork should be at least 57 inches above the floor. If you are hanging more than one painting, you need to use a modular picture. This type of picture is usually a single image. In a living room, you should hang an individual painting at eye level. Otherwise, you should hang a group of paintings or a gallery of larger works. When it comes to art size, keep in mind that smaller pieces can be too small.
  • The second biggest mistake when deciding how many paintings to hang in a room is not using the right height. It is important to keep in mind the height of the walls when hanging tall art. The height of the artwork should be approximately eight to 10 inches above the furniture. If the wall is a little lower than the floor, consider a vertical painting. It is best to choose paintings that are visually connected to the furniture.
  • You can hang smaller pictures at the bottom of the arrangement and large ones near the top. This method will give you more flexibility with the style and placement of the pieces. A gallery wall is a good way to hang more than one painting in a room, and you can always change the composition as needed. Moreover, you should consider the size of your furniture and the space of the wall. Then, you can determine how many paintings should be in a room.
  • If you have a sofa, you should hang two paintings above it. They should be the same size. You should also place the art 15cm above the furniture. For example, a painting placed above a sofa should span the width of the sofa. However, a painting hanging above a couch should start at least eight inches above the furniture. If you have a large sofa, you should hang a large painting.
  • If you have a smaller room, you should hang two or three large paintings. A gallery wall will create a more balanced look. A gallery wall is a good idea for rooms with limited space. When you add several large pieces, you should avoid placing them on the walls of the sofa. This way, you will have the option to move around them as you like. The more artwork you have, the less space they take up.

We all want our homes to look good and for us to feel god while we are spending time there. This is one of the reasons we put so much effort into decorating our living space and making it more comfortable. For those who are not fans of ready-made decorating items and who prefer to express their creativity by taking up interesting DIY projects instead, here are four breath-taking DIY ideas for the walls of your home or office.

    ideas for the walls

    Postcards wall

Postcards used to be so important, in the era where phone calls were expensive and not many people had phones anyway, those were the only ways to let someone know you were thinking of them when you were away, and vice versa. Your grandma and mom probably have a stack of old postcards from previous century somewhere in an old box in the attic or basement, and would be thrilled to go through them again. If you can’t find some from your family, you can buy postcards in thrift shops and garage sales for very little money and turn them into beautiful wall art. This way you will be able to remember the past much more easily, and your walls will have that beautiful vintage aura.

    Postcards wall

    Mosaic frames

For this, you only need a bunch of old CDs and some glue. You can cut the CDs with big scissors if you would like to work with straight edge pieces, or you can break them to get uneven pieces which you could use as a puzzle. Put all the pieces in a big box, get a simple photo frame and glue the pieces onto it. Once you are finished, you will get a beautiful reflecting frame which will look great on your wall and it will even act as a mini disco ball and reflect the light that your lamps and chandeliers cast.

    Mosaic frames

    Industrial chic

If you live in an apartment with predominant industrial wall design, such as urban exterior wall cladding, go with rustic steam punk decorations. These can include pipe wall lamps and minimalist metal sculptures made of wire, copper, or brass. What is more, when you have visible pipes or pipe lamps, you can use them to hang photos on strings from them, which will give you rustic air that matches industrial design of your place perfectly. Framed art works well too, like old signs. What is more, simple chalkboard that doesn’t have to be too big can serve as your canvas where you could leave ordinary notes and it will still look like modern and innovative art.

    Industrial chic

    String and nails

This type of wall art takes very little time and money to make and it looks amazing once it’s finished and hanged. Take an empty frame or a simple piece of wood or even styrofoam and use it as a canvas into which you will stick nails or pins so that they form a certain shape; for example a leaf or a Batman sign. Next, you take a thread or string, tie it around one nail and start ‘braiding’ a picture going from one nail to another. You can make it as thick as you like and you can even combine differently coloured strings to create vivid artwork. You can even choose to put nails all around the frame and ‘braid’ outside the desired shape if you like.

It doesn’t take too much of your time, patience, and money to take up these projects and turn the ideas into action. It is important to be creative and innovative and to always look for new ways to express yourself, because the space in which you live and work should be a reflection of who you are.

The problem with a two-toned room is that it can be a little drab. Yes, you can easily play with the colors to make the whole room appear bigger, but if you are after aesthetic appeal, then two colors will seem safe, plain, and simply uninteresting.

To make a room livelier, cozy, and warm, why not create a red accent wall?

What is a Red Accent Wall?

A red accent wall is simply one wall of the room painted red. However, creating a red accent wall is a very bold move since it will contrast loudly with the other colors of the room.

You really have to choose the right shade of red to pull off a beautiful accent wall that emphasizes a room rather than make it gaudy.

    Red Accent Wall

Color Combinations Perfect for a Red Accent Wall

Before you paint one wall of the room red though, choose the red shade carefully. Don’t use too bright a red color though; it’ll appear garish. Instead, choose a muted red color, such as brick red, Indian red, or maybe even dark burgundy.

These colors work well with lighter colors such as beige, white, cream, and even gray and taupe colors. You can also try these colors with white and black.

If you’re going to use a red accent wall in the bathroom, it’ll look best with white. The clean, sterile look of white will be balanced by the red wall tiles. The red accent wall will give the bathroom depth and, at the same time, add a focal area in an otherwise stark room.

Tips in Creating the Red Accent Wall

Pick three shades of red paint samples before you create the red accent wall, and then paint sample squares for each of the three shades on the wall, making sure that you label each square with the name of the paint accordingly. Allow the paint to dry before giving it another coat of paint.

The paint will change after a few days. What started out okay may not look good after a while. This will help you make a good decision when choosing the shade you want for the room, and this will also help you observe the colors in different settings, such as time of the day or in natural or artificial light.

When painting the room, be sure to place drop cloths to protect your floor. You don’t want the paint staining the floor or the carpet. Before you apply the red paint, use a primer first. Some people will tell you that it’s best to use a pink primer, but to be sure though, always ask the paint technician.

Of note; white primer is a big no-no if you’re going for a red accent wall. It’ll only make you spend more money on more red paint to create the effect that you want.

Finally, make sure that you paint the wall twice or thrice. It’ll need at least that much coats of red paint to totally cover the primer and give you the depth you want. Make sure that the paint is thoroughly dry, too, before adding in another coat of paint.

If you’re unsure of your red accent wall, then be sure to get in touch with your local interior designer who can give you the best tips when it comes to accent walls. An accent wall is a very good way to liven up a room; however, if you’re unsure, then always consult with your local interior designer first.

Feature walls – the overdone statement of the modern household. Fear not avid interior designers! This trend is about to get a much-needed boost as it leaves behind small print paper. Think big, bold patterns to catch your eye. It’s time to ditch symmetrical print wallpaper and turn your concrete canvas into a beautiful mural.

Hung in the same way as conventional wallpaper, stunning statement walls provide a welcome change to ‘same old same old’ feature walls.

    Create Your Own View

Perhaps you don’t quite have the cityscape view you imagined, or you just want to create your own little getaway? Picturesque images of buzzing cities and dream destinations help you to disconnect from the 9-5 grind and transport you away from life’s worries. These feature walls work particularly well in communal areas where the bustling atmosphere of these cosmopolitan cities is reflected.

    City-Hazy-Summers-Day-in-Paris-Mural-Room

A particularly great choice for small rooms, they give the illusion of expanding space. Stretching across your walls, towering monuments and crowded buildings pose a completely different theme than the repetitive floral tiles and stripes of mainstream wallpaper.

    Fashion Isn’t Just Worn

    Indigo-Ombre-Mural-Wallpaper-Room

Ombre. It looks great on your hair, great on dip-dyed jeans and now it looks even better on your walls. This simple wash of watercolour adds a new lease of life to drab walls. Effortlessly cool and chic; this fashion statement lends itself well to modern feature walls to help us escape tedious tiled patterns.

Pair pastel colours together for an even more colourful wall with a soft finish. Mint green and baby blues are a popular option and they allow you to work with brighter or deeper shades of green and blue for your soft furnishings.

For those a little less adventurous with colour, ombre lends a helping hand. You can mix almost any colour with plain ol’ white for a more subtle effect. The gradient gently lifts your room with just a touch of colour, but not too much.

    Future of Florals

    Design-Illustrated-Birds-and-Berries-Mural-Room.jpg

Big is beautiful when it comes to floral prints. Why have tiny illustrated flowers cluttering up your walls when you can have this bold statement wall mural, which allows them to flourish? Let multi-coloured leaves, berries and blooms climb your walls, filling every inch with botanical beauty.

The trick with giant floral murals is to try and keep them in the same colours as your furnishings. You should have a few colours to play with, so take a maximum of 3 and coordinate your appliances and soft furnishings. Adding new colours into the mix will only confuse guests and take glory away from the wall, which will look completely out of place if you don’t attempt to match your household items.

As you can see in the image above, both the table and chairs match with the walls even though they aren’t the same colour as each other. Some accents of blue would finish off the room beautifully. This modern approach to interior design presents us with a colourful alternative to minimalism and allows us to get creative.

    Where the Wild Things Are

    Traditional-Tree-Wall-Mural-Room

The secret garden, enchanted forests and wonderland – all of the most incredible journeys of our childhood took place out in the depths of nature. Relive every precious memory and create your own more mature magic forest.

Natural patterns of fauna and bracken awaken the senses, so it’s recommended that you don’t implement this outdoor/indoor trend in the bedroom. Modern interior doesn’t just take patterns and colour into account, it appreciates rich textures that brings life to our walls. The rough bark of these trees and dew-kissed morning grass presents us with two contrasting textures, each desperately provoking our mind to imagine exactly what they feel like. If only we could step right into our walls!

You can go one step further and bring in natural furnishings to really immerse yourself in the outdoor trend. Rustic carved wooden coffee tables and chunky knit sofa throws make you want to curl up in your own humble hideaway. Homemade soft furnishings also add a kitsch twist, so this is a great opportunity to get crafting and really give your living space that stumbled upon, little home in the woods vibe.
