Moving or Storing Mattresses

It doesn’t matter if you have purchased new mattresses and you do not wish to get rid of the old one or you are just taking your mattress from one location to another. It is imperative for you to have an idea on how to move or store the same properly.

In case you do not show a careful attitude, there are high chances that it might get dampened, damaged or even both. There are chances that your bed will lose its comfort, as a damaged product loses its supportive strength. At the same time, if not stored properly, it becomes a home for different kinds of mold and mildew. This may lead to a lot of serious health issues.

There are a number of factors, which you should consider, when you wish to store a mattress.

Moving or Storing Mattresses

  • Ideally, you should store your mattress in an environment, which is dry and its climate can be controlled. This makes sure that you cannot consider outdoor sheds or damp basements at all. One of the best areas to store them are dry places of your home or units, where you can monitor the humidity and temperature.
  • In case you need to store mattresses for a temporary period, you need to use a dehumidifier. It should be placed next to your mattress for safety measures. Such devices help in getting rid of the excess moisture from the air and ensure that your mattress stays dry for a long period.
  • Prior to putting your mattress in a storage area, you should make sure that the place is completely dry. Even if it is wet to a minimal level, you should first let it get dried in a sunny weather on the outside.
  • You must make sure that it gets lifted from the ground on a regular basis for allowing the air to flow across it. This is going to help in speeding the drying process. You should never put damp mattresses in the storage.
  • In case you are moving mattresses from a location, you should always keep them in an upright position. By making such a move, you protect them from being damaged by objects, which might be placed on them in case they are not in upright position.
  • Conversely, when you are storing them, you need to make sure that they are placed flat on dry surfaces. This prevents them from collapsing on them.
  • Whenever you are storing mattresses in dry area, you must wrap the same in plastic sheet for keeping them free from liquid, dust and soil. Plastic sheets are a must in case you do not find a mattress bag. You need to make sure that each of the parts of the mattress is getting sealed using duct tape.
  • Again, the plastic wrapping should be watertight. Placing mattress on dry floor, when it has been wrapped tightly might damage it, as they absorb the moisture from its cement floor.

If you own a quality mattress, remember that you have made a healthy investment. Thus, you should make sure that effort is being made to move or preserve it correctly.
