With more days filled with sun than not, living in Adelaide provides you with plenty of opportunities to enjoy your pool throughout the year. While a pool is a sound investment, it is not a decision that should be rushed into without doing your research first. When a pool isn’t installed up to standard, it can be an ongoing headache. A new swimming pool or spa must be installed to meet strict pool safety and planning laws. Here is what you need to know:

Knowing the Safety and Planning Laws for Adelaide

Regardless of where you live, there are pool planning and safety laws and regulations enforced. They do differ though. Before work can start on your pool, you will need to get a Building Rules Consent and Developmental approval from your local council. They are looking for the following things:

  1. The location of your CPR signage.
  2. Details of your pool safety barrier.
  3. How safe your pool pump is.
  4. Evidence of sufficient structural support for your pool or spa.

When sourcing a builder to install your pool, you need to ensure that they are a licenced contractor.

Your pool needs to have a compliant safety barrier in place, and you’ll need to apply for a Swimming Pool Permit with SA Water before you can fill the pool with water. SA Water will only give you go ahead if you have a Smart Approved WaterMark cover for your swimming pool.

You will need to provide proof of purchase along with your application. Fines apply for failing to meet the above criteria. The paperwork aspect of building a pool is done by our professional team so, you can sit back and relax while it’s taken care of for you.

The South Australian Building Code stipulates that all swimming pools must have:

  1. Water recirculation systems
  2. Secondary outlets
  3. Warning notices

Which fibreglass pool is best suited to me in Adelaide?

When in the market for a swimming pool or spa, you may notice that there are seemingly endless options available. This can make the process overwhelming. You want to choose a pool for your home that will not only be enjoyed now but for many decades to come. There isn’t one dominant pool type that people in Adelaide choose, it comes down to the size of the backyard, budget and what you want to use the pool for.

If your backyard is lacking space, some great choices may be a lap pool, plunge pool, or swim spa, and if you have plenty of room to accommodate a pool, you can have virtually any size you like.

Our family pools are one of our most popular types, and people from all walks of life love the idea of having a generously sized pool in the backyard. Establishing how much you are willing to spend is a great starting point. From there, you can look at pools in your price range.

Can I use my pool all year round with Adelaide’s weather?

The weather here in Adelaide is superb for the most part which allows you to enjoy many days having fun in the sun around the pool. The exception is winter. As the temperature drops, so does the desire to go swimming, and the pool typically goes unused. If being able to use the pool in comfort year-round is important to you, then installing a pool heating system may be highly beneficial.

By only using it in winter, you can keep your running costs down. There are several different types of heating systems available, and they all have their pros and cons. It’s best to research them first before making your choice to ensure you are getting the right one.

We are locals here at Barrier Reef Pools Adelaide, and we have had the pleasure of building thousands of pools right across this stunning state. We take immense pride in our work and our customer service, and we believe this is why we are Adelaide’s go-to pool company.

Our time in the industry has seen us receive 124 awards from The Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) and our fibreglass shells hold the prestigious SAI Global Australian Standards 5 Tick Certified Product Certification.
