Core Drilling

One of the main objectives of core drilling is to drill the core of the Earth, in order to look for and produce, samples of the core of very high quality. Now this core sample is used to check the mineral content and to check the quality of the rock or of the soil in the Earth’s core. Core drilling is a rotary, cutting and drilling method which consists of a ring-shaped structure, the drill, armed with very sharp cutting objects like diamonds or tungsten carbide.

Core drilling is a method that is mostly used for mineral exploration, where the drill has to plummet through thousands of feet beneath the ground. After the core drilling is complete, a so-called, the core sample is taken out of the soil or rock.

Now, there are very common areas of Drilling like for example:

  • Exploration drilling
  • Definition/Infill drilling
  • Site investigation rock mechanics
  • Site investigation soil mechanics

A bit more Details about Core Drilling

A core drill is composed of drill bits, motor and handle. One of the main and biggest differences between core drilling and other cement cutting tools are core drilling equipment’s extract the sample directly from the soil material.

  • Since the center of the drill is hollow, the drill can carve out a sample of the material, also the sample which is carved out takes the shape of the drill used to carve it out. It includes drilling holes into the wall and including perfectly round holes in ceilings, floors and other concrete structures.
  • A core drill can drill through many substances like wood, rock, cement and even ice. The size and power of the drill differ on the basis of the work it’s used to do. It’s small and comparatively very less powerful for one used in homes.
  • There are different types of drills available and it is suggested that different drills are used every time for different surfaces to bring out the best performance.

As discussed before the most common areas of Core Drilling, here are a few more details about them:

Core Drilling

1. Exploration Drilling

Exploration drilling, as the name suggests is to explore the drilled sample. The exploration geologists explore the sample to see whether there are any valuable items in the sample or not.

2. Definition/Infill Drilling

This is wholly based on mining. In this type of core drilling, the mining geologist drills through the surface to check for ore boundaries and to examine the ore concentration deep in the mine for various production purposes. For instance, there are multiple companies that work for airport runway lighting, manholes, culverts, do well drilling and major building constructions. Apart from this, high-quality drilling services can be hired to serve anywhere, in case they have the required tools and equipment’s to manage large-scale projects.

3. Site Investigation Rock Mechanics

As the name suggests, this type of core drilling is based on rock mechanics. In this type of core drilling the rock mechanics engineer, analyses the rock mechanics of the rock mass and the hydrological and mechanical properties of the rock mass.

4. Site Investigation Soil Mechanics

As the name suggests, this type of core drilling is based on soil mechanics. In this type of core drilling the geotechnical engineer studies the soil sample from the core sample in order to determine and obtain information whether the soil layer needs to be reinforced and whether it needs to be sealed.

Core drilling revolutionized the mining industry and has led to many important discoveries and also has led to many new safety ideas and protection of the constructions supposed to be done on the surface, for example, earthquake proofing.
