Box Trailers Maintenance

There are many car lovers and trailer fans who would save all their life and apply for a loan to get the trailer of their dreams. But, most of the vans and the box trailers that are constructed these days have hardwood flooring. Apart from the floors, there is an engine and some other utility sections that have to be maintained for efficient performance on the roads.

Each trailer is unique and will come with its own maintenance cycles. You will have the experts working on the cleaning and servicing. But, when you think of maintenance, you will have to put in some efforts as well.

Still wondering how would you be able to contribute to the maintenance of the trailers? Here are some ideas to start with:

1. Checking the Weight

The first thing you need to understand that each of the box trailers comes with their own weight capacity. You need to adhere to these specifications to be able to maintain your trailer for a longer time. Overloading can pressurize the different components of the trailers. This will simply shorten the shelf life of the trailer.

Also, it makes the trailer unsafe when you apply the brakes. So, you will have to always ensure that whether you are on a commercial move or on a family break, you will have to keep the weight on check. Never ever think of overloading the trailer no matter what kind of an emergency it is.

2. Hinges and Locks

The entire functioning of the box trailers depends on the hinges and the locks. So, you will have to make sure that you keep checking the hinges and locks on a regular basis. You need to look out for 2 things – the security and the functioning. Make sure that the locks are tight and secure in their place.

Also, you need to see if the hinges are functioning efficiently. This means they will have to be properly lubricated. There is no need to hire an expert or professional trailer servicing technician for the same. You simply can learn to do it yourself. However, if you mess with the tailgate hinges and locks, your entire safety will be compromised.

3. Tire Pressure

When you look at any box trailers, you will have to check for the tire pressures. They provide stability to the entire van be it is standing or on the move. So, you will have to keep checking the pressure and see if it is in the normal range. You can find the details in the manual or the trailer guidebook. There might be slight fluctuations throughout the year depending on the weather conditions.

However, you will not want the tire to burst or lose the stability especially when you are traveling. If the right pressure is not maintained, the tires might not be able to take the load and perform with stability.

4. Axle Springs

Another important element in any of the box trailers is the axle springs. You will have to be careful that they are not rusted. A good axle spring is the one that sits securely on the support seat. Additionally, the bolts of the axle springs should be tight enough.

Hence, you will have to keep checking often if there is any sign of rusting or damage. It is not about how new or old the trailer is but about the climatic conditions that has been exposed to. Also, the number of travels the trailer has made. If you are an offbeat person and have taken the trailer to unusual locations, you will have to run a check on the axle springs.

These basic 4 checks can keep most of the box trailers in good condition for a longer time.
